Identify a password hash format

Compare an unknown hash with over 250 candidate formats. Results are suggestions based on structure; similar algorithms can share the same appearance.

Enter a hash to check its possible formats

The check runs in your browser. Your input is compared with local format patterns and is not submitted to OHC.

Paste one hash value without a label or surrounding quotes.

How hash identification works

Hash identifiers compare details such as length, character set, and format markers. A plain 32-character hexadecimal value, for example, may match several algorithms, so an identifier cannot prove which one was used.

Look for salts and format markers

Prefixes and separators can narrow down the candidates. In formats such as Unix $1$salt$digest, dollar signs separate fields and the salt is part of the stored representation.

For an authorized assessment, confirm the application or system that produced the value before selecting an algorithm. See the accepted hash list for supported formats.

Frequently asked questions

How can I identify a hash type?

Compare its length, character set and any format markers. A 32-character hexadecimal value may be MD5, NTLM or another 128-bit hash, a value starting with $2y$ is bcrypt-style, and $1$ indicates MD5crypt. Paste the value into the identifier to list the possible formats, then confirm with the context of where the hash came from.

Can a hash identifier be certain?

No. Several algorithms produce output with the same length and character set, so an identifier lists candidates rather than a verdict. The application or system that generated the hash is the best confirmation.

Is my hash sent to OnlineHashCrack?

No. Identification runs in your browser against a local list of format patterns, and this page does not submit the hash you type.

Which hash formats can OnlineHashCrack recover?

The accepted hash list shows every supported algorithm and the account tier required for each. Use it after identifying a candidate format.

Need a complete password audit?

Once you know the format, submit an authorized hash to OHC’s GPU-accelerated recovery service.
